MAHARANI GAYATRI DEVI: THE OG IT GIRL

Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur was the queen consort to Maharaja Sawai Mann Singh II.

Born to Maharani Indira Devi and Maharaja Jitendra Narayan of the princely state of Cooch Behar.

Post marriage Gayatri Devi found interest in politics. This was seen when she joined the Swatantra party and later went on to becoming a member of parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Aside from being known for her political involvement, Gayatri Devi was celebrated for her unmatched beauty she beheld and her sense in style. She was almost always spotted donning a chiffon saree and a set of pearls.

Fun fact: The Maharani's mother Indira Devi of Cooch Behar actually introduced the fabric chiffon to India. Indira Devi actually spent a lot of time in France, which is where she came across this fabric. She then got her sarees made to her liking and soon manufacturers of chiffon sarees established in India. Gayatri Devi hence carried her mother's legacy.

One of the Maharani's mantras is to never wear emeralds with green but pink.
Maharani Gayatri Devi not only wore traditional Indian garments but also found pride in wearing tailored trousers and western wear.

She truly was the "it" girl of the time!
