THE ART OF FILMMAKING: EP 1 Romeo and Juliet who?

Romeo and Juliet who? I heard Anarkali and Salim!

That's right today's discussion is about Anarkali and Salim, the most celebrated star crossed lovers.

63 years ago in 1960 Hindi cinema's most loved and adored movie blessed silver screens all over India. Mughal - E - Azam is considered a quintessential example of the wonders of Indian cinema. It is one of the first big budget, star studded projects of Hindi cinema.

Directed by none other than K. Asif and in pivotal roles you will see Prithviraj Kapoor as Akbar, Madhubala as Anarkali and Dilip Kumar as Salim.

The movie is based of a famous folklore in India about Prince Salim a Mughal prince and Anarkali a beautiful courtesan who shared a forbidden love. Although Prince Salim existed in history, there is no so record of a courtesan named Anarkali. This story truly remains a mystery and even today nobody can confirm the existence of this story.

The story takes place in the city of Delhi where crown prince Salim and court dancer Anarkali meet and fall in love but are cruelly forced to part ways by Salim's father Emperor Akbar due to status differences.

This movie is what I would call pure art, it is one of the classic Hindi films. One a movie buff would love

Mithali
